How to Protect Your Smile While Traveling

If you’ll be heading out of town this summer, you’ll likely be making a checklist of all the things you need to bring to ensure you have a great time. But while it’s easy to pack a phone charger and plenty of clean socks, what many people don’t prepare for is a dental emergency. Here’s what you should do if you suffer from an unexpected oral health problem while traveling abroad.

Domestic Travel or Travel to a Location Where You Speak the Local Language

If you are vacationing somewhere within the United States or where you speak or understand the local language, finding an emergency dentist is a lot easier. If stateside, check with your dental insurance provider for a list of nearby dentists, ask locals or the concierge at your hotel for recommendations, or check sites like Google reviews.

If Traveling Abroad…

Should you be leaving the country or heading to a location where you do not speak or understand the language, it pays to do a little research prior to your departure. Create a list of emergency contact numbers including the local consulate or US embassy. These agencies can often provide referrals or help you locate reputable dentists in the area.

How To Reduce your Risk of Dental Emergency

Although it’s impossible to prevent every dental emergency, there are still many things you can do to reduce your risk of experiencing one, including:

  • Visiting your dentist before you leave for vacation, so your smile has a clean bill of health, and you don’t need to worry about any unexpected emergencies.
  • Packing your oral hygiene supplies, including your toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and oral appliances.
  • Continuing wearing your bite guard or sports mouthguard if needed.
  • Using bottled water to drink and brush your teeth and not opening your mouth when swimming or showering.
  • Avoiding treats that could damage your teeth, such as very sticky or crunchy foods.

If All Else Fails…

If you are experiencing a dental emergency and unable to locate a dentist, head to the nearest emergency room for help. If they cannot treat you, they may be able to help direct you to someone who can.

Remember, your vacation should be full of exploration and fun, not spent sitting in pain in a dental chair. If you’re headed out on a trip this summer, take a moment to make sure your teeth are healthy, and arm yourself with information in case of a dental emergency.
