What Are Dental Veneers?

A veneer is a very thin type of restoration that is made out of material that closely matches the appearance of natural tooth enamel. When a veneer is attached to the front side of a tooth, it can conceal all kinds of imperfections, from stubborn stains to small chips and cracks to misshapen or unusually small teeth. Some patients may only need one or two veneers, but others may require around 8 or 10, depending on the changes they have in mind.
The Process of Getting Veneers

Getting veneers is a process that normally takes at least two visits. At the first appointment, we’ll create the necessary space for veneers by removing a small amount of enamel from your teeth. Then we’ll take impressions of your smile and send them to a trusted dental lab. The process of making permanent veneers usually takes at least a couple of weeks, so temporary versions will be attached to your teeth to keep them safe until then.
When you return to our office for your second appointment, the temporary veneers will be removed from your teeth. We’ll then place the permanent ones and make any necessary last-minute adjustments. At that point, you’ll be ready to show off your new smile to the world!
The Benefits of Veneers

There are many reasons why veneers can be an excellent option for enhancing the appearance of your smile:
- They allow you to make multiple improvements to your teeth at once with just one treatment.
- They are very comfortable to wear, and the process of placing them is minimally invasive.
- They are highly durable; if you take good care of them, they can last for around 10 or even 15 years.
Understanding the Cost of Veneers

Before you have veneers placed, our team can give you an estimate of the expected cost of the treatment. Note that the amount you end up paying will depend on the number of veneers needed as well as other factors. It’s also important to remember that dental insurance usually won’t help pay for veneers that are being placed for purely cosmetic reasons; however, you still have other options for making the treatment more budget-friendly such as Cherry financing.
Veneers FAQs
Are Veneers Permanent?
Veneers aren’t really “permanent” because the shells don’t last forever. However, the process of getting them is irreversible. That’s because a very small amount of enamel must be removed so the veneer can sit naturally on each treated tooth. Once the tooth has been modified, the enamel won’t grow back, so you’ll always need some type of restoration to protect the tooth.
But there’s no need to worry. With good oral care, veneers can last 10 to 15 years or longer, making them a durable and long-lasting cosmetic solution. How Many Veneers Will I Need?
One of the great things about veneers is how flexible they are—there’s no one-size-fits-all solution as to how many you’ll need. The number depends entirely on your goals. If you only want to improve one or two problem teeth, veneers can target those specific areas while keeping your costs down.
However, if you’re dreaming of a total smile transformation, most patients need six to eight veneers across their upper front teeth. This is typically enough to create the bright, symmetrical, Hollywood-style smile that many people think of when they picture veneers.
Can You Whiten Veneers?
Unfortunately, veneers can’t be whitened with traditional treatments. Professional whitening works on natural enamel because it’s a porous material full of microscopic holes. However, the materials used for veneers—generally porcelain—don't have pores, so whitening products won’t change their color.
This is good, in a sense, because it makes them more stain-resistant than natural teeth, and if your veneers become stained on the surface, a professional cleaning can often restore a lot of their luster.
If whitening is on your mind, we recommend going through that procedure first, then matching your veneers to your new shade. However, if you’ve already had them placed and don’t like their color, replacing them may be the best option.
How are Veneers Different Than Crowns?
It’s easy to get confused when it comes to restorations like crowns and veneers because they can both improve the aesthetics of your smile. However, they serve different purposes. A veneer only covers the front surface of a tooth and is used for cosmetic improvements like chips, stains, or minor alignment issues.
A crown, on the other hand, covers the entire tooth and is necessary when a tooth is weakened, damaged, or needs structural support. Crowns require more enamel removal, while veneers are more conservative. At your consultation, Dr. Vo will recommend the option that best protects your oral health and achieves your goals.
