How Dental Insurance Works

There are key points about dental insurance that can help you navigate the details of your plan and how to use it to your advantage:

  • Most dental insurance plans only cover preventive and restorative services. Some may offer orthodontic coverage, but certain stipulations may exist (i.e., available for those 18 years of age and under).
  • Preventive services are usually covered at 80-100% (i.e., dental exams and cleanings), minor restorative services are usually covered at 70-80% (i.e., dental fillings), and major restorative services are usually covered at 50% (i.e., dental crowns, dentures).
  • You must meet your annual deductible before your dental insurance company begins to pay more for the services you receive.

What is the Difference Between Dental and Medical Insurance?

Medical insurance is designed to provide the greatest savings after an accident or illness has occurred. Your wellness checks will unlikely be where you save the most. Instead, your insurance company will pay more should you require hospitalization or another extensive form of care.

Dental insurance, however, rewards patients who are proactive about their oral health. By seeking preventive care twice each year, you’ll pay little to nothing out of pocket. You’ll also spend less money, even if you need some form of restorative care, like a dental filling, dental crowns, dentures, or a root canal.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

There is a money-saving difference between seeing an in-network versus an out-of-network dentist. At Radiant Smiles, we partner with several companies to make paying for oral healthcare services easier on your wallet.

In-Network

Tooth and a stack of money

In-network dentists enter into an agreement with various dental insurance companies to provide services at a lower fee, making sure patients can easily access affordable care. Some of the dental insurance plans we are in-network with include:

  • Ameritas
  • Aetna
  • BlueCross BlueShield
  • Cigna
  • Delta Dental
  • Dental Select
  • Guardian
  • Humana
  • Principal Financial Group
  • Sun Life Financial
  • The Standard
  • United Healthcare

Out of Network

If you do not have a plan with one of the insurance companies listed above, do not worry. Our team at Radiant Smiles will still review your policy and find ways to help you save. We’ll also take care of filing the necessary paperwork so that your claim will produce the maximum reimbursement from your insurance.
