Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

If you stick to good oral health habits on a daily basis, you might wonder whether you really need to attend a checkup and cleaning every six months. You do! These appointments are important for several reasons:

  • Early diagnosis: We can often identify oral health issues before they cause any noticeable symptoms. This leads to easier, more conservative treatment plans.
  • Remove tartar buildup: You might accidentally miss a few spots when you brush your teeth; plaque in these areas can turn into tartar, which is not possible to remove with home care instruments. Our team can remove those deposits to keep your smile clean.
  • Teeth polishing: This reduces bacterial adhesion and can help your smile stay healthy.
  • Personalized advice: We are happy to provide personalized guidance on how you can take excellent care of your teeth day after day.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

Before you see Dr. Vo, a member of our support staff may take some X-rays (usually once per year) and take a preliminary look at your teeth. Let them know if you have any concerns or have noticed any unusual symptoms so they can pass that on to the dentist. You should also make sure that we are updated on your medical history and current medications.

Dr. Vo will then perform a thorough examination of your teeth, using instruments like a dental probe and other non-invasive tools. If he diagnoses any issues, he will let you know what course of treatment he recommends. Before you leave our office, you will have the opportunity to schedule any needed restorative services.

What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning

During a cleaning, your hygienist will use a scaler or other instruments to thoroughly remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. They will also floss the tight spaces between your teeth and polish their surfaces. In some cases, your cleaning may also include a topical fluoride application. You may notice some pressure as our team works, but most patients find the process to be quite tolerable.

Our hygienists are full of knowledge, so do not hesitate to ask questions if you would like advice on things like proper oral hygiene techniques, the best home care products, and other relevant topics.
