What Is a Dental Crown?
A crown is sometimes referred to as a “cap” because it covers the entire portion of a tooth that protrudes beyond the gumline. A crown’s job is to protect the tooth against additional damage while restoring its shape and function. The Process of Getting a Dental Crown
The process of designing and creating a dental crown takes two appointments. During the first visit, we prepare the tooth by either removing some of its enamel or slightly building it up. The goal is to make sure that it will fit well beneath its restoration. We use numbing agents so this process is as comfortable as possible.
After the tooth is prepared, we use our digital impression scanner to capture images of it. The digital impression is then sent to a lab, where skilled technicians will create your permanent restoration. When it is ready, you will return to our office so we can attach it to your tooth. In the meantime, you will wear a temporary crown.
